The following clubs and/or activities are at present in existence at the school:
Amnesty International Group: A member of a state-wide network of school groups, active in campaigning for human rights. Activities involve writing letters to government, an annual fundraiser, students attending an annual conference and sometimes social interaction with other groups, including other Amnesty groups.
Magazine Committee: Each year the school produces a School Magazine, "Reflections".
Public Speaking and Debating: The school competes in the Lions' "Youth of the Year", and other public-speaking events as well as the Queensland Debating Union debating competitions.
Student Forum: Social and Cultural, Public Relations, Student Welfare and Safety, Sport and Leisure committees have been established to assist in the conduct of student-centred school activities. Student Forum is a student based organisation set up to benefit the needs of the student population within the school. Each year the Year 12 students are given the opportunity to nominate for the positions of President or Secretary of the Student Forum. The executive of the Student Forum (President, Vice-President and Secretary) is determined by elections in which all students are eligible to vote.
The Student Forum consists of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, all Care Group Captains and Prefects. Four committees (Social and Cultural, Public Relations, Student Welfare and Safety, Sport and Leisure) are formed from the members of the Student Forum. Student Forum holds monthly meetings which are chaired by the President.
Instrumental Music Program: The school has a Concert Band, Stage Band, Jazz Band and String Ensemble, which are under the instruction of Instrumental Music tutors, and perform at formal school occasions, Toowoomba Eisteddfod, Fanfare, Queensland Festival of Music and public events. An Instrumental Music Parents' Support Group meets on a regular basis to assist in the selection and procurement of instruments, raising of funds, and organisation of musical events for the Concert Band, Orchestra, etc.
Students are encouraged to participate in any of the above activities and also to assist in the organisation and conduct of other lunch-time activities in addition to those mentioned. The school considers the social and cultural development of its students to be important.
Earlier in the year students and parents nominated 9 teachers from our school for NEiTA teaching awards for their commitment to education at Pittsworth. I am pleased to be able to announce that Head of Department, Languages, Ms Kristy Thomson has been identified as one of sixty award recipients, nationally. I think that this is a thoroughly deserved and appropriate recognition for Ms Thomson who sets high expectations and challenges her students to rise to those expectations.
School Canteen Awarded:
The hard work and dedication of Mrs Kay Ott, the school’s canteen convenor has been recognized by her being awarded Regional School Canteen of the Year. This is a well deserved acknowledgement for the fantastic job that Kay does in the School Canteen.
